BARNSLEY COLLEGE

Barnsley College and the Department for Education are investing £15million in our Church Street campus to transform this historic building into an exceptional centre of innovation and world-class technical education for South Yorkshire.

Once complete in 2025, the Barnsley campus of the South Yorkshire Institute of Technology (SYIoT) will offer a state-of-the-art learning environment that replicates industry conditions and uses the latest equipment. The heart of the project is the new atrium, combining learning resource and study zones set over three mezzanine floors, with a café and breakout area at ground floor level.

As an Ofsted Outstanding provider, our curriculum is centred around the delivery of Higher Technical Qualifications, Apprenticeships, and technical Level 3 qualifications. These programmes of study are co-designed and delivered with employers, giving students access to masterclasses and real-world experience to stand out in the job market. They offer flexible modes of delivery, including evening, weekend, blended classroom, and online options.

Overview of subject areas

We offer higher and technical programmes in Construction, Digital and Engineering. Our curriculum is designed to ensure it meets the needs of our students and the local skills economy. Students across the SYIoT and all of our subject areas benefit from guest speakers and masterclasses led by industry experts, who give insight into the sectors and industries they represent.

Courses are currently taught across a range of campuses with dedicated facilities. Our Digital and Computing classrooms give access to environments that replicate conditions across specialisms such as cyber security, network technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality, software and programming. Engineering programmes are predominantly taught in our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre, which offers engineering and electrical workshops, laboratory facilities and learning zones.

The Construction campus offers practical spaces in which to practice brickwork, wall and floor tiling, plumbing, plastering and joinery skills, in addition to well-equipped and inspiring work areas for students studying technical and higher pathways.
